About this course

This course will cover everything you need to do to grow your own delicious vegetables: planning and ground preparation required; an in depth look at crop groups; pest and disease management; extending the season.

Course Description

Using both theory and practice, we will look at:

  • Planning your crop rotation and seed sowing schedule
    • What is organic and why is it important?
    • How to grow different groups of vegetables – legumes, roots, brassicas, alliums and beets
    • Preparing beds and use of compost – caring for your soil and soil assessment
    • Ways to extend the season – growing under cover
    • Pest and disease management
    • How to avoid bare soil over the winter – winter crops and green manures

Course Materials

Included

On this course, the tutor will supply the materials used for planning and designing a vegetable garden, i.e. handouts, and also seeds for sowing, pots and compost and a pH testing kit.

What students need to bring

Outdoor clothing suitable for gardening, including wet weather gear, boots and gardening gloves Pens/pencils and a notepad – ideally A4 to map out crop rotations, etc. and no smaller than A5

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Jane is a tutor with 25 years of experience in gardening. She trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and was Head Gardener at Schumacher College.
