About this course

Learn the fundamentals of sculpting with borosilicate glass in the flame. You will learn flameworking skills and techniques that will allow you to construct with glass using a bench torch.

Course Description

On this course, you will learn the methods and techniques of flameworking with glass. Flameworked glass is the discipline of working glass in the flame of a small oxygen and propane fueled bench torch.

The course will cover the fundamentals of working with borosilicate glass to sculpt solid forms. You will have the opportunity to learn flameworking skills and techniques that will allow you to experiment, play, practice and construct with glass at the torch. Techniques will include gathering, shaping, stretching, sculpting, bridging, bracing and carving detail into glass at the flame.

On the first evening, you will be given a narrated demonstration by the tutor. This will help you understand the principles of the technique. On the first full day, you will be guided step by step through the process of creating a small hanging sculptural object.

The two working days of the course will be structured around demonstrations and independent practice with the torch, along with individual guidance. The course will be focused on exploration and investigation, rather than finished products. There will also be discussions about studio set up and the different families of glass that can be used with the torch, along with guidance about what equipment will work best for individual practice.
