Travel photography encompasses many genres including landscape, portraiture, architecture, reportage and street photography. You will look at all these genres by studying the work of inspiring photographers whilst also learning about composition, light and exposure – the essential building blocks that make a great photo.
You will be given photo assignments to shoot in the beautiful grounds and buildings of West Dean, as well as an excursion to Brighton to practise street photography on the Friday or Saturday (packed lunch provided).
There will be opportunities for individual or group tutorials where we will look at your work and give contructive feedback, including a daily post-dinner evening slideshow of the day’s shoot.
The focus of my course will be on the joy to be found in creating beautiful or interesting images, rather than the technicalities of how to use a camera or editing software, which can be learned on other courses. While not essential, some basic knowledge of photography would be an advantage. It’s also suitable whatever digital camera you have, from the latest DSLR to the simplest of smartphone cameras. However, it will be expected that you are familiar with the camera functions on your camera/phone. “The best camera is the one you have with you!”
What students need to bring
- Any digital camera – DSLR (with lens/es), point and shoot, smartphone - whatever you’re most comfortable with
- A screen to view your images – ideally a laptop or tablet but even a smartphone screen will do (the bigger the better)
- Memory cards, batteries, chargers and cables (to download your images to a laptop or tablet)
- Powerbank – if you are using a smartphone
- Tripod – if you want, not essential
- Your laptop, if you prefer to use your own to download images to
- Notepad and pen
- Clothing and shoes suitable for all outdoor weather conditions of all kinds. Please include a sun hat, sunscreen, rainwear and walking shoes (including walking the streets of Brighton), and a day pack for your lunch!
Bring a note of your own Adobe ID login. If you don’t already have one, please register for a free account at www.adobe.com prior to the course, and remember to bring the details with you.
Additional information
Please note that it is essential that you are physically fit to be able to walk at a steady pace on the day long excursion, which includes inclines in Brighton - and carry your own photography equipment/lunch.
Due to a variation in the standard timetable, an evening ‘slideshow’ and feedback session of the day’s photography in Brighton will be on either Friday or Saturday – as weather dependent . This is planned from 8-9pm, so non-resident students may book an dinner at the College on the day.
It is essential that you have computer skills, and a familiarity with Adobe Lightroom software would also be an advantage. You will be allocated a PC in the College's digital computer suite.
