About this course

This two-day intensive course will provide conservators with the theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the use and application of Nanocellulose in conservation. The course consists primarily of practical workshop-based activities, with participants making and using a variety of Nanocellulose films, Nanocellulose suspensions and Nanopapers to conserve a selection of paper supports. This practical learning opportunity will be supported by lectures and group discussions as well as opportunities to handle and assess the relative properties of a variety of Nanocellulose films.

Course Description

This course is applicable to:

  • Library and archive conservators
  • Paintings and works of art on paper conservators
  • Photographic materials conservators
  • Textile conservators
  • Organic objects conservators

Objects with thin, translucent or transparent supports, such as tracing papers, are commonly encountered in archive, library and museum collections. The fragility and structural weakness of these materials present a challenge to custodians and conservators, and poses a risk to integrity of the media and the information they carry. This risk becomes particularly problematic when there is a need to handle these already fragile materials for research, digitisation, or exhibition. The field of nanotechnologies offers new possibilities to consolidate and to stabilise thin, weak, translucent and transparent supports using an innovative material approach. This course focuses on two specific types of nanomaterials: Nanopapers created from films and Nanocellulose suspensions or gels.

During the course, participants will:

  • Gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of Nanocellulose and its derivative materials
  • Receive the latest experimental data on the use of Nanocellulose in conservation
  • Study and examine various samples of Nanocellulose films and Nanopapers to assess their relative applications for conservation
  • Learn how to make and use a variety of different types of Nanopapers
  • Learn how to use Nanocellulose suspensions and their treatment applications
  • Learn innovative methods to consolidate translucent and transparent supports
  • Receive full information on suppliers
