Press Release: West Dean College of Arts and Conservation to host its first online music appreciation course
West Dean College of Arts and Conservation will be hosting its first Online Music Appreciation Course via Zoom – Live online Course: Brahms, music appreciation – on Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 9am-5pm.
The course with Roy Stratford, which costs £75, is Suitable for all, and is divided into sessions covering Early Brahms, The reluctant Romantic; Masterpieces of Chamber Music, Brahms and the Creative Process; Brahms and the Symphony and Brahms the Progressive. Each section will be followed by a question and answer session and discussion with the tutor. Johannes Brahms stands outside the mainstream of the Romantic Movement. His music is a fascinating combination of traditional forms and powerful, romantic harmony, often creating a profound emotional effect in his chamber music repertoire.
Roy Stratford was very lucky to have had a music teacher at school who had been a student of the great Austrian modernist composer Anton Webern and who inspired in him a great love of music and a particular interest in the Austro-Germanic tradition from Bach to Stockhausen. He went on to study music at Reading University and then the Royal College of Music (conducting with Norman del Mar) and has since developed a very varied musical career as pianist, conductor, composer and lecturer. More details can be found online.
In addition to this course, the College has also released other live and self-paced online short courses that are suitable for all abilities, in a variety of subjects including painting, drawing and tapestry weaving - including some with optional craft boxes. See all online short courses here.
