Press Release: As We Can't Visit Japan, Japanese Inspired Creativity Comes to West Dean College
Don’t fret – we can’t go to Japan for the Olympics and Paralympics, which starts on Friday, July 23, 2021 but you can come to West Dean College of Arts and Conservation for a variety of courses inspired by Japanese art and creativity over the next few months. You can learn traditional Japanese techniques and crafts and bring a touch of Japanese style to your home.
Five Japanese Inspired Courses
- August 30 - September 2 - Contemporary Japanese woodblock printmaking with Adrian Holmes (Suitable for all) £416
- October 10 - 13 - Traditional shibori textile technique with Rob Jones (Beginners/Intermediate) £391
- October 19 - Modern Kintsugi gilding – gold leaf repair for ceramics with Richard Walker (Beginners/Intermediate) £143
- November 18 - 21 Japanese woodcut printmaking with Akiko Fujikawa (Suitable for all) £426
- December 5 - 10 - The art of imperfection – wabi sabi with Helen Turner (Intermediate/Advanced) £636
With public passion for craft at an all-time high, West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is on a mission to help students make time to make. The College has a wide variety of short courses available to all abilities covering a wide variety of crafts including textiles; pottery & ceramics; painting & drawing; jewellery and photography. They span from one to five days and range in price from £128 upwards.
Other short courses available at West Dean include: gardening; metalsmithing; creative writing; sculpture; woodworking and basketry. The College is a perfect place to escape and recharge, and the courses offer the opportunity to get hands on with arts and craft skills as well as boost your wellbeing in the process. Set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, in a stunning location, the College’s rural setting makes it particularly attractive as more of us take the opportunity to reconnect with and discover the restorative power of the natural environment.
To ensure a safe and welcoming campus, the College has put in place measures operating on a principle of the same as, or better than, national guidelines.
