About this course

A guide through the fundamentals of drawing the figure – experiment with techniques and materials to help explore the fundamentals of how you perceive and draw the figure.

Course Description

Life drawing is at the heart of so many artists’ practices – from early Greek painters to Lucian Freud, how we see and draw the human form is an exciting and magnetic subject, and its depiction so particular to what it is to be human.

Over the course, you will be guided through the fundamentals of figure drawing and how you see and respond to visual information. Experimenting with techniques and materials to help nurture your own interests, from charcoal to ink, you will focus on the figure and its surrounds, learning how to make observations in a context and how the figure relates to the space in which it stands.

Working alongside the tutor, for whom representation and the figure are key to his practice, you will work through various exercises and approaches as a group whilst simultaneously engaging one-to-one with the tutor. Looking at line, tone, volume, mark-making and gesture, the aim is that you will nurture an approach that can be perpetuated beyond the life room and the course.
