During this course, you will look at various drawing methods suitable in describing the shape, structure and volume of the figure in space.
During the course, you will work though several exercises using charcoal, Conté, pencil and ink to define light and shade, positive and negative shapes, depth, weight and form.?You?will achieve a greater understanding of human anatomy and proportion using measurement techniques.? Drawing directly from the nude, a number of both short and long poses will be studied. ?Short poses will allow you to experiment with new materials and techniques while longer poses will allow for more sustained and considered study of the figure.
You will examine a variety of drawing techniques using pencil, graphite, Conté (stick or pencil), charcoal, brush and ink. ?Pose lengths will range from five minutes to half a day.
A life model will be provided for the duration of the course.
The College will provide some A1 cartridge paper and newsprint per person, plus some charcoal, ink and masking tape to share amongst the group. A life model will be provided for the duration of the course.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
Daily Timetable
Course teaching: 11am–5.15pm
Students arrive: 10.30am-11am (coffee optional)
Morning teaching: 11am-1pm
Lunch break: 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching: 2pm-5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm
Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the Materials to bring section.
Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.

Adele is a painter and printmaker, born in Yorkshire and trained at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the Slade School of Fine Art London.
She is a tutor with over 20 years teaching experience with a focus on working from direct observation of the figure, portrait and still life subjects. Adele teaches at West Dean College,
Arte Umbria, Putney School of Art and Slade School of Fine Art, London.
