About this course

Photoshop is an industry-standard image-editing program used by designers to add colour, texture and detail to visual materials and presentations; InDesign is Photoshop's sister publishing program, which is used to combine text, images, vectors and other prepared content into a finished product for print or digital publishing. This Photoshop and InDesign course has been created specifically for Interior Designers and their specific day-to-day needs.

Course Description

This one-week course introduces students to the introductory skills needed to begin working with both Photoshop and InDesign computer programs. Strong emphasis is placed on best practices, and approaches are derived from experience and working solutions. This course is aimed at design students and professionals, and examples and course materials will relate to interior design practice, but could be applied to other disciplines.

Step-by-step progress is made under the close supervision of KLC tutors. You will spend the first half of the week learning to manipulate visual material using Photoshop image-editing software and, during the second half of the week, you will move on to create page design and layout for professional presentations and documents.

Day One - Photoshop:

  • Photoshop User Interface
  • Document Set Up - Image Setup Dialogue Box
  • Understanding the differences between: Canvas size; Image Size and Resolution in Pixels/mm; File size
  • Workspaces
  • Create, Open and Import Images
  • Layer Management and Manipulation
  • Selection Tools and Techniques
  • Most Commonly Used Transform Tools

Day Two - Photoshop: -Image Colour Adjustments -Layer Masks

  • Clone Stamp
  • Content Aware Fill
  • Save Photoshop Files and Save as JPEGs
  • Layer Management and Manipulation – Cont.
  • Brushes
  • Colours, Swatches and Gradients

Day Three - Photoshop:

  • Basic Floor Plan Rendering using Colours
  • Applying Layer Effects - Shadows and Glows
  • Filter Effects
  • Basic Floor Plan Lighting Effects
  • Apply Photoshop's Built-In Patterns as Overlays
  • Working with Type
  • Printing and Export Options

Day Four - InDesign:

  • The interface
  • Document setup
  • Organizing a project
  • File referencing and folder structure
  • Margins and columns
  • Rulers, manual guides and smart guides
  • Working with frames
  • Pen tool
  • Colour, fill and strokes
  • Basic effects.

Day Five - InDesign:

  • Working with objects
  • Working with text
  • Image manipulation and formatting text
  • Creating style
  • Master pages
  • Tabs and tables
  • Managing images and texts
  • Pen and fill, paragraph and text tools
  • Save and export options
  • Producing Adobe PDF
  • Placing a multi-page PDF
  • Creating a hyperlink.

Course Outcomes:

  • Develop an understanding of basic Photoshop and InDesign skills
  • Learn how to use core tools for your interior design business
  • Understand how to edit images and import and format these as part of documents and with text
  • Discover how to create a portfolio using these powerful programs

This course is open to applicants with existing professional skills of visualisation, and with confident computer skills. Photoshop sessions will focus on rendering and polishing interior design visuals but not creating these in the first instance. This course is suited to professionals and to students of design. All West Dean/KLC software courses are taught on PC computers.

A PC will be provided for each student for use throughout the course.

  • Bring a note of your own Adobe ID login.  If you don’t already have one, please register for a free account at www.adobe.com prior to the course, and remember to bring the details with you
  • A USB memory stick or similar to save your work

Course teaching 10am–4.15pm
Students arrive 9.30am-10.00am (coffee optional)
Morning teaching 10am-1pm
Lunch break 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching 2pm–4.15pm (15 minute break)
Teaching finishes 4.15pm

General Information

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
