About this course

This course, taught by Tracey Bush, will introduce you to some of the possibilities offered by adapting the concertina format book. Tracey's book, 'Dusk' is on display in the Treasures of the British Library in London and is a unique double concertina format, which Tracey will show you how to create during the course.

Course Description

At first, you will explore making folded books from a single sheet of paper, and simple pop ups, all of which can be made to different scales depending on the original sheet size.

The base structures of pamphlet stitch and concertina with hard covers will be covered, which can then be combined to make small scale sculptural books, which are ideal for display. Unlike the traditional codex, adaptations of the concertina are often included in gallery exhibitions. The double concertina structure will be taught, which includes some simple paper cutting to enhance the three-dimensionality of the structure.

The course will combine some general bookbinding practice, grain direction, choice of papers, glues and tools, with an experimental approach to content and structure. This workshop will provide you with the skills to experiment with making books at home. All the techniques covered use small tools which are easily transferable.
