The day is an introduction to basic lino printing methods. You will be printing with black ink, concentrating on composition, design and the possible marks you can make with the lino tools.
Initially you will be shown many examples and possibilities which will fuel your excitement in this graphic printmaking skill. We will look at good design, cropping and format (the shape of your print).
You will learn to develop your ideas from photos and drawings into linocuts, to understand positive and negative shapes and their impact on your design. Next you will be shown how to transfer your design onto the lino, to build and develop your carving and cutting techniques to produce textures, line and tone in your design.
There will be demonstrations on how to use the tools safely and how to ink up your lino to achieve a good result. You will be shown how to register your print and use the printing press and how to burnish by hand.
You will have the opportunity to add colour to your prints using Chine collé, which is a method of incorporating fragments, cut or torn shapes, of thin papers/photos or patterned papers into your work.
You will take home several prints and the skills and confidence to continue making work at home. Teaching will be given in the form of practical demonstrations of techniques, one-to-one tuition and instruction on use of equipment.
On this course the College will supply most of the materials including A5 soft cut vinyl, paper, tracing paper, coloured tissue, white tissue, newsprint, black ink, powder glue, a black fineliner pen and a 4B pencil per student.
You are encouraged to bring visual source material and ideas such as drawings, photos, sketchbooks etc. This is optional as you will be provided with everything you need. Option to bring thin coloured papers and photocopies of patterned coloured papers you may want to incorporate into your designs. An apron
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.
