About this course

A day of printing and folding – when rubbers aren't for rubbing out, but for making marks, and flat sheets of paper shape-shift to become unique boxes. Carve your own rubber stamps and print papers with them to create folded boxes.

Course Description

Learn how to cut images, text and patterns from erasers and enter a world of hand block printing that is immediate and accessible and easy to continue at home. Discover how to work creatively with your rubber stamps, registering multiple colours, masking your prints and producing repeat patterns. You will have a chance to print decorative patterns, images that are illustrative or abstract, or text and lettering.

Learn how to make ‘no glue’ folded paper boxes. Consider the three-dimensional possibilities of paper and how your prints can come alive when a two-dimensional sheet of paper becomes a three-dimensional object.

Ruth will show a selection of her own work and the rubber stamps she uses to create it. She will explain her design process and how her ideas, that might just start as a quick sketch or a scribbled note, take shape.

Demonstrations will be delivered as a group with plenty of time for one-to-one guidance too. You will be encouraged to develop ideas from your own starting points, enabling you to make unique and individual prints and boxes.

This day could be the beginning of making printed boxes for gifts or packaging or it might be an addition to your existing practice – both elements of the course could be extended into other creative fields.

At the end of the day, you will leave with some hand carved rubber stamps with which you will have printed at least one folded paper box to put them in. You will also have gained the skills to continue making rubber stamps and boxes at home.

You will be required to use small hand tools, including a scalpel.
