This course will introduce you to a style of binding known as the French link stitch. This is an exposed spine binding, where the sewing becomes a decorative element of the book. The advantages of this type of binding is that is also allows the book to open flat. No previous experience is necessary.
We will make one A5 notebook with a soft cover, bound using a French link stitch that will create an ‘X’ pattern along the spine of the book.
You will be introduced to some standard tools and learn some basic bookbinding skills. At the end of the day you will go away with a handmade book, plus the knowledge to continue to make more at home.
You will have the opportunity to work with different types of papers and learn about measuring, folding and cutting paper for projects.
On this course the tutor will supply most of the materials including:
A4 folder or padded envelope to take their books home in.
Tools: Awls, bulldog clips, rulers, scalpel knives/blades, beeswax, bone folders, bookbinding needles, pencils, pencil sharper, scissors and cutting mats are available in the studio for use on the day.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
