Surinder Warboys
Surinder Warboys studied Fine Art and Stained Glass at Wimbledon School of Art and Newport School of Art in South Wales. She founded Myglassroom in 1990, a studio specializing in architectural stained glass, conservation and tuition.
Major commissions have included many public buildings from churches, schools and hospitals to private houses.
Her work has appeared in Crafts and the Journal of Master Glass Painters.
As a visiting artist, she has taught and lectured in schools and universities including Sunderland University, UK and Chandigarh School of Art and Architecture, India.
Her experimental works on glass have twice been selected for exhibition in the British Glass Biennale. She is also a member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and the Contemporary Glass Society.
Approach to teaching
My approach to teaching is a focused exploration of the possibilities within the medium of stained glass, in particular stained glass painting. The aim is to develop a personal understanding of a range of processes within painting on glass and how this research can play an important role in generating ideas and image making itself.
The paint and stain is the same as has been used in stained glass since medieval times and fired for permanency.
What inspires my work
My work has its roots in both East and West. My last journey was to the Ajanta Caves, India a remote mountain region with ancient monumental Buddhist monasteries, carved into the mountainside. Excavation and conservation are recurring themes in my work both conceptually and practically.
As is the history of stained glass combined with the practical experience of restoration, in particular medieval painting and staining techniques, all of which are a great inspiration to me.
I am motivated by the simplicity and boldness of an open form, in which I am able to create a register of my unique processes and experiences. Through these layers, combined with personal meditations on the elemental world and its forces, I am reimagining the potential of historic techniques within glass and painting.
