Julie Norburn
Julie Norburn is an established tutor with 25 years’ experience working with mosaic.
In the late 1980s, it was through painting and my interest in colour and pattern that moved me towards mosaic. Upon completion of my BA (Hons) in Community Art and Education, I turned to the creation of site-specific mosaics for public and community art projects. Following my PGCE teaching I realised I could combine my passion for mosaic and teaching so I founded community arts organisation Art4Space in 1999. As a freelancer and with Art4Space I have created work for numerous schools, housing estates, community centres and hospitals using ceramic and mosaic.
Describe your approach to teaching:
I am very excited about teaching how to create a unique mosaic mandala, working with pattern, colour and intention. I will lead you through an array of mosaic techniques, interspersed with mindful magical moments guided by me. I have an extensive range of materials on hand to help you create a piece of art you can take away and treasure, which will be a reminder of your intention or wish. Previous participants have said they love the subject, concept and creative flow and will keep their mosaic for life.
What inspires your own work?
My method is essentially the same as it was thousands of years ago. Cutting every single piece by hand and adhering it to a hard surface. I depart from the ancients however, with the help of modern technology and the existence of the brilliant and diverse materials that I use. I am fascinated with the decorative element of mosaics – assembling the pieces together to make a picture or pattern. I am constantly collecting an assortment of materials which I can join together to express my personal vision.
