Hazel Thorn

Hazel is a contemporary silversmith specialising in mixed-metal fusing and patination. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, completing an undergraduate then a Masters degree before spending a year as an artist in residence, which involved working with students in all stages of their studies. She is now a regular visiting tutor at ECA.

Her work is held in permanent collections by The Goldsmiths' Company (London) and the Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths. She also collaborated with Hamilton & Inches (Edinburgh) and made a section of the ceremonial mace for the University of the Highlands & Islands.

A recent piece of Hazel's work can be seen at the V&A, where is is on display until June 2017. This is as part of the exhibition 'Silver Speaks' by the Contemporary British Silversmiths, of which she is a member.

I love working with metal, and find sharing this very exciting. I enjoy both teaching technical skills and working with students as they find their own voice and develop a body of work. For many people, myself included, these two areas are very much interlinked, and learning new methods can lead to fascinating new design possibilities.

My practice is influenced by experimenting in the workshop, and also by my upbringing in the Highlands of Scotland. I aim to capture a sense of movement in my work.
