Deirdre Wood
After training at UCA, Farnham, Deirdre has brought a fresh
approach to the ancient technique of strip weaving, twisting her
strips to give the fabric a third dimension. Recently she has begun
to use fibres with contrasting physical properties to create
dramatic curved strips and circles designed for architectural
settings.
Describe your approach to teaching:
I encourage students to see the advantages of working with simple
equipment and also aim to enthuse them with the possibilities of
using cloth strips to assemble more complex pieces.
What inspires your own work?
I am fascinated by traditions of narrow strip weaving, especially
those of West Africa, and these inspire me to bring fresh ideas to
the narrow strip technique.
