Alex Powell

Alex graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2005 and has worked under the artist name Alex R since then. Her production work has been sold in Liberty, the V&A, the National Gallery and many galleries and shops around the UK and bespoke work has been commissioned for various private and public spaces. She has been a judge for the Stevens Competition for Architectural Glass for the last two years.

I combine clearly explained demonstrations and comprehensive notes in my teaching, but I mainly try to encourage an atmosphere of mutual problem-solving through group discussions as I believe you will learn most from your own experimentation and from sharing your techniques with your fellow students.

I am inspired by the material itself. Working with glass involves an understanding of scientific principles and technical calibrations, but the result - exuberant in colour, inviting in texture and rich in metaphor - speaks to the soul.
