Abigail Burt

Abigail Burt is a Royal College of Art Sculpture MA 2020 graduate. Her artist practice considers our connection with our environment, with an emphasis on ecological awareness and public participation. In 2019 she founded Kinstinct Arts, an arts and ecology platform, from which she is currently running the project Lost-Wax for Lost-Species. 

Abigail runs a portable foundry which she activates for artist-led projects, demonstrations and workshops. She is a Churchill Fellow, for her study of lost-wax casting in Nepal and India. Her paper on the traditional techniques of Lost-Wax Casting can be read here. 

Abigail specialises in the contemporary art medal, and since her year as the British Art Medal Society New Medallist in 2012, has has undertaken commissions for The Goldsmiths’ Company, The British Museum, The United Guilds Service of St.Paul’s Cathedral and The Royal Mint among others. She now sits on the BAMS council as commissioning secretary.

Abigail has taught in a diverse array of contexts, including; associate lecturer of UCA Rochester and UCA Farnham; artist-led workshops for projects such as The Thames Festival, Lost-Wax for Lost-Species and as artist in residence at Rochester Square Studios; Shambala festival alongside her bronze casting pitch; short courses at Northampton Museum and Denman College. 

Describe your approach to teaching

My approach to teaching is all-inclusive, spontaneous and experimental, with an emphasis that all participants will walk away with a successful and personal outcome.

What inspires your own work?

I am primarily inspired by the diversity of the natural world we share Planet Earth with. I also continuously gain inspiration when witnessing the greatness of other creatives in both the arts and music.
