Materials Week: Clay
16 to 20 February 2025

A week of courses celebrating the versatility and creative possibilities of clay. Whether you are a seasoned ceramicist or a curious beginner, you’ll discover how this ancient material continues to evolve, influencing modern aesthetics and techniques in sculpture, pottery, mixed media, and more.

Clay has been used for thousands of years across cultures for both practical and artistic purposes. Clay is a natural material, that can be sustainably sourced and is hugely versatile; coming in a wide range of rich textures, varied colours and types such as earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, each with its own unique properties.

Each Material Week course is thoughtfully crafted to highlight different aspects of working with clay, from traditional techniques to innovative approaches. You can relax and embrace the tactile and mindful nature of working with clay, guided by expert tutors as you create something unique with this multi-faceted material.

All of our tutors will be invited to give a short talk (10 minutes) about an aspect of their work relating to the theme of the week on Tuesday evening at 5.15pm. Participants will also be encouraged to visit other courses to see the work produced across the varied approaches offered in the week.
