Chamber cellos – ensemble playing with Kim Mackrell

Ref: SWE35891

About this course

A weekend of cello ensembles for players grade 6 to advanced, playing music of all genres. The emphasis is on ensemble, sound production, overcoming challenges, building confidence and having fun with like-minded cello enthusiasts.

Course Description

This is a weekend where music of all genres will be explored and where the art of ensemble playing is a central focus. There are challenges for all and tips on how to overcome them.

The parts are allocated in advance according to the playing level of each person, with stratospheric parts for the advanced and willing, and more straight forward parts for the less advanced. Challenges in music are not always related to the difficulty of the notes, but to the techniques required to create the necessary sounds or textures. These are the really interesting explorations when it comes to ensemble playing. With a varied program of music each piece will call on a certain approach to create a certain style, and the range of possibilities afforded by the cello is endless.

Whilst the work we do will be focused and as detailed as time allows, the other aim is that players have fun in the process, and that each individual leaves with a widened perception of what is achievable for them in their music making.

After dinner on Friday we will have a short rehearsal in the Old Library to play through our program. Saturday evening after dinner there will be a performance in the Old Library.
