On this course, you will create a multi-layered scroll, decorative tin and altered book which combine elements to represent a story or memories.
You will combine lightweight papers and delicate fabrics to create a base scroll using techniques such as collage, monoprinting, stencilling with different mediums, stamp making, stitching and adding texture using different textiles. The scroll will then become your substrate for adding images using image transfer techniques. The images will be embellished using paint and glazes, dried flowers, stamps and stitch.
You will also decorate a vintage tin, around which you will wrap your scroll. The scroll will be housed in an altered book cover.
At each stage of the creative process, you will be using materials and images that represent your story, so it will be important to have planned the story you wish to tell, and gathered images, words and motifs to represent it.
This course is suitable both for students with basic skills, as well as more intermediate students who wish to explore ways of combining mixed media and textile techniques as a means of storytelling.
On this course the College will provide some of the materials, such as acrylic gesso, bookbinding PVA glue and acrylic modelling paste to be shared amongst the group. The tutor will also provide some materials for shared use, such as an ink pad, letter stamps, A5 creative foam, tissue paper, sandpaper, copier paper and tracing paper.
