This course will focus on depicting the parkland of West Dean College, guided by your tutor. You will be exploring the local topography to discover vantage points from which to paint this majestic landscape. The tutor will introduce you to the processes involved in oil painting and the many and various decisions you need to make as an artist, including underpainting, your colour palette, colour mixing and choice of brushes. The course will develop your ability to capture the fleeting effects of light whilst also capturing a sense of place.
This will be primarily an outdoor painting course. However, in the event of bad weather there will be opportunities to work under cover as well as in the studio from your drawings. You will be working on quick, one-off oils, and also on one or more sustained painting, aiming at a sense of space, light, form and atmosphere.
