The figure and still life around a table has been a staple of painting for many artists. From religious scenes to the everyday, painters from Leondardo Da Vinci, Pierre Bonnard and John Singer Sargent have made pictures expressing this relationship. For your tutor, this too is a fascinating subject, and one featured frequently in his practice.

Over the course, you will move from drawing to painting, working in charcoal and ink before progressing into oils. Painting a scene where the model adopts several poses around a table of still life, under different lighting, you will try a variety of approaches to help discern a way forward.

Your tutor will guide you through the fundamentals of oil painting, studying colour mixing, application and materials knowledge. By looking to artists both past and contemporary, you will be encouraged to nurture your own idiosyncrasies, looking at aspects of depth, light, narrative, composition and space in relation to the figure.

With an emphasis on responding with earnestness and observation, by looking at this scene that is so much a part of our lives, it is hoped you will leave the course with fresh eyes to encounter subjects within your own life.

• Oil paints: Mixing White/ Flake White Hue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow,
• Phthalo Green, French Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo blue, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna
• Zest-it/odourless solvent, linseed stand oil
• Pastels (optional)
• Paper (if you have a preference)
• Charcoal, pencils and charcoal pencils
• Hog hair brushes - diverse set
• Large brushes (hog/synthetic)
• 2 x palettes
• Rags
• Canvas boards and/or canvas panels

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.
