About this course

Explore the use of found papers and textiles to create rich mixed media layers as a base for collage work. Discover how the winter landscape or garden can be a rich resource for creative exploration.

Delivered in a live session via Zoom on Monday, 3 and Wednesday, 5 March 2025. Tuesday, 4 March is an untutored day for self-directed study while developing your work.

Course Description

This course will be taught over two days (3 and 5 March) with an untaught day in between designed to give you time to develop the work made on the first taught day. This work will then form the basis of the explorations that happen on the second taught day.

Discover how the everyday things you have to hand can be a rich tool for both resource and reference.  Look through your collections of old cloth, handkerchiefs, clothing, vintage fabric and found papers think and choose some that reflect the colours you would like to work with. These will be used to create mixed media layers as a base for stitch and collage and introduce you to the notion of making paintings with cloth.  Your visual narrative will be informed by the references to be found in the winter landscape from your own sources such as sketchbooks (if you have them) and photographs.

You will increase your knowledge and confidence in working with a number of techniques used to create complex layered surfaces exploiting found materials and basic media (paint, inks etc.) supported by live demonstrations and guidance by the tutor.  This course is suitable for complete beginners or those with some related experience. Confidence with a sewing machine is useful but not essential.

Cas Holmes’s approach is hands-on, experimental with a strong emphasis on using found materials and inventive applications of textile and mixed media processes as part of the exploration of developing a creative language. She is the author of of several books, the most recent ‘Soulful Stitch’ (Batsford, 2024) ‘Embroidering the Everyday (Batsford, 2021) and ‘Textile Landscape’ (Batsford, 2018).
