This course is suitable for beginners or those with previous experience of linocut. You will be shown a variety of techniques and be guided though the process to create your own multi-layered reduction prints. Methods of printing will be covered, and you will print by hand and use an Albion press. Once you have created an initial design, you will undertake the exciting reduction process to create intricate layered effects and colour overlays using both cutting and texturing techniques.
The first evening will be spent putting reduction linocut into context as a medium and beginning to cut some initial small blocks. Over the next four days, you will first develop a small two-layer linocut to experiment with colour-layering before moving onto a larger block, which will allow for multiple layers and added textures. You will be able to work on designs that you have brought with you or develop them during the course, with guidance in composition and draughtsmanship.
You will be shown how to print successfully by hand and using a press. Correct techniques of registration will also be explored. Three exercise blocks and two mounted lino blocks will be available for you, but you may wish to bring more, or blocks you have previously worked on.
On this course, the College will supply most of the materials, including inks, three 75mm x 75mm unmounted lino blocks, one 100mm x 150mm mounted lino block and one 150mm x 200mm mounted lino block, a small and large goat hairbrush and some assorted printing papers.
Available from shop: Printing paper, basic linocut tools, lino, printing ink, pens, pencils and sketchbooks are available to buy.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
