On this practical course you will produce a substantial body of experimental drawing in charcoal, brush drawings in ink, and acrylic paintings on board and paper.
You will be guided in your exploration of the innovations in pictorial space, composition, cropping, and often unusual viewpoints found in the Japanese art that so influenced European painters such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassat, Henride Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh.
Each day will begin with a slide show looking at a particular aspect of this relationship of influence. There will be one-to-one and group tuition throughout, with plenty of discussion and critique. There will be practical demonstrations in both drawing and painting, and opportunities to photograph source material from the gardens and environs of West Dean.
The course will aim to establish a process of woking in series where making simple comparative judgements help to make work where learning and progress is both clear and personal.
By the end of the course, you will have produced a significant body of atmospheric and expressive landscape paintings. You will have gained confidence in making use of Japanese art influences in your own practice. You will also have become increasingly comfortable in making personal, critical judgements and taking control of the direction of your painting.
