On this practical course, you will be introduced to a lo-fi printmaking technique which recycles packaging cartons into intaglio printing plates. Marks, lines and areas of tone can be made using an etching needle, craft knife and other tools. You will be introduced to the notion of intaglio print and how to think about and work an image onto a printing plate, taking it through to print. In addition, this found material has an interesting character of its own and you will be encouraged to make use of the folds, marks and shapes offered up by the cartons to both inspire and become part of the finished prints.
You will start by making a test plate and ink it up to put through the press. This way, you can get to know the medium and experiment with the kinds of marks that you want to make whilst generating ideas to develop your own images.
You will be using oil-based printing inks to preserve the life of the plates, so please wear old clothes or bring an apron. Gloves and cleaning materials will be supplied.
Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples and conversation in support of your developing ideas.
