Through a series of three days spread over three months in one block, our mentoring programme for tapestry and mixed media artists are the first in a series of mentoring and discussion groups that will take place through the academic year. The days which make up this first course will run on 5 February, 5 March and 2 April 2025.
The emphasis is on supporting you in finding ways of developing and sustaining your individual creative practice from research through the design process to a final outcome. Highlighting your strengths and identify areas which you feel need to be addressed in order to develop your creative practice and ongoing discussion with an experienced fine art textiles tutor and your peers.
You will be part of a small discussion group (maximum 6 students) who will help you to reflect on the aims and ambitions for your work. You will be guided to find your own answers and to find ambitious and unexpected ways of directing your practice.
At each session the tutor will present areas for potential research and a contextual discussion around artists and processes. At the start of the mentoring programme, any requirements for technical support or additional teaching will be discussed and scheduled as needed.
Your aim for these sessions could be to complete a final artwork, or work with samples that could evolve into a final piece further down the line. To get the most from the mentoring course you will need to carry out practical work in the weeks between sessions, bringing what you have done to the tutorial days. Students working with tapestry, stitch and other textile media are all welcome – you should be at the point where you have the beginnings of a defined practice and some ideas or interest to start from.
