About this course

Discover 'Lithino', a unique technique combining lithography and lino cutting, developed by Mary Dalton. Learn to create expressive, painterly prints, working in monochrome or colour for dynamic, one-off artworks or small editions.

Course Description

On this course, you will dive into ‘Lithino’, a technique developed by Mary Dalton that blends lithography with lino cutting. This workshop focuses on the environmentally conscious aspects of printing.

You will learn how to create lithographic marks on a traditional artist’s lino and use it both as a lithographic matrix and as a linocut. The marks will give your prints a more drawn and painterly quality, using materials like crayons, pastels, pencils and brushes to create a range of expressive textures. All of this is done directly on the lino before it is processed to stabilise the image and the matrix. At times, the lino can also be treated like a classic linocut, introducing more graphic elements into the piece.

Throughout this course, you will learn both lithographic and relief printing techniques. Prints will be made using an etching press to create dynamic and unique results. While you will primarily work in monochrome to fully understand the technique, you can introduce colour if you wish. ‘Lithino’ works best for small editions or one-off prints, celebrating the process of creating a unique piece each time.
