About this course

Learn traditional techniques and skills for drawing portraits.

Course Description

You will be working with a model from life and you will learn how to ‘see’ in new ways in order to capture the essence of your subject. You will learn perspective drawing skills and chiaroscuro (light and darks) using charcoal and conté crayons (please feel free to use pencil if you wish).

You will look at ‘angles’, structure and even a little anatomy in order to understand the head and facial features. There will be the chance to practise different views and poses, working up to building a tonal drawing. There will be a continuous pose to allow replication of a portrait ‘sitting’ and give you the chance for a finished drawing.
