About this course

Explore the core techniques of oil painting 'en plein air' on the shady lawns of Russell Square. You will paint outside as much as possible, as well as in the studio.

Course Description

This course will focus on depicting some of London’s squares in oils. London’s squares offer a sanctuary from city life, some through symmetry, structure and elegance whilst others allow this escape through meandering paths and irregular shapes. The contrast between the overbearing mass of building and the gardens presents a variety of textures, compositions, colour and interest.

You will be guided through the process of finding a motif, developing a composition and making a painting. The tutor will introduce you to the processes involved in oil painting and the many and various decisions you need to make as an artist, including underpainting, your colour palette, colour mixing and choice of brushes. The course will develop your ability to capture the fleeting effects of light inside London’s squares whilst also capturing a sense of place.

This will be primarily an outdoor painting course. However, in the event of bad weather, there will be opportunities to work under cover, as well as in the studio from your drawings. You will be working on quick, one-off oil sketches, and on one or more sustained paintings, aiming at a sense of space, light, form and atmosphere.
