About this course

Taking inspiration from the surrealists and Edward James' Las Pozas sculpture garden, this workshop explores dreamlike scenes with surprising elements. Play with form, composition, and fabric reliefs through traditional craft techniques to reveal your inner surrealist.

Course Description

Join award-winning Textile Artist Alice Burnhope for this short course in mastering traditional craft techniques to create your own tactile surrealist A4 artwork, inspired by Edward James’ ‘Las Pozas’ Sculpture Garden.

The course begins with Alice facilitating an inspirational talk about her practice, techniques, and a brief introduction to the surrealism movement.

On the first day, we will dive into 15 textile hand processes, enabling you to create your artwork.

You will learn:

  • 6 embroidery stitches
  • 4 appliqué techniques
  • Adding texture through gathers, pleats, quilting, and volume through stuffing

The second day focuses on creating your own A4 surrealist artwork. We will start with an hour of sketching your design and discussing which techniques to use. The rest of the day will be dedicated to bringing your artwork to life, with Alice’s support throughout.
