About this course

This course introduces sketch modelling, a bridging process between two-dimensions and three-dimensions. It is a day of drawing, making and experimenting with materials to explore form and surface.

Course Description

This course introduces the skill of sketch modelling, a bridging process between two-dimensional visual research and three-dimensional development. There will be a balance of drawing and making, switching between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional throughout the day. You will draw from objects and images before interpreting your subject matter in simple three-dimensional materials such as paper, card and tape. This process helps to move from the recreation of source material to a point of abstraction in the development of design and sculptural ideas. You will consider material properties, form, surface, scale and volume and how changes to these visual elements can impact your creations. You are encouraged to bring source material in the form of objects, images and any existing sketchbook work, but there will also be objects available to draw. A series of guided exercises will lead to more independent development with tutor support as the day goes on. This course would suit those looking for approaches to working in three-dimensions, students building a portfolio for art college and those wishing to break out from existing working patterns, experiment with materials and draw. You will learn what sketch modelling is and explore the sculptural potential of paper and other readily available materials. You will be encouraged to explore variations of form and surface through drawing and making.
