Monotype printing develops both the draftsperson and the painter in you. A visit to the nearby British Museum with its rich collection of world artefacts will offer inspiration and ideas for drawing. The drawings will be interpreted to produce direct tracing, additive and subtractive printing techniques.
You will be gifted with a small sketchbook and taught ways of recording museum objects through drawing. You will learn how to adapt and interpret your drawings using several monotype printing techniques and produce a series of characterful monochrome unique prints. This course is designed for those who want to learn how plates, ink, paper and presses are synchronised to give the most effective results.
By the end of the day, you will have produced a series of drawings and prints that are all unique. You will have learned to work with and without a press.
This is part of a series of four monotype printing courses that can be taken as a group or individually.
The College will provide some polycarbonate clear sheet, a variety of quality printing papers, including some Japanese printing paper, newsprint and tissue paper per student, plus some black, white and primary-coloured inks to share amongst the group.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
Daily Timetable
Course teaching: 11am–5.15pm
Students arrive: 10.30am-11am (coffee optional)
Morning teaching: 11am-1pm
Lunch break: 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching: 2pm-5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm
Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the Materials to bring section.
Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.
