About this course

Learn to paint from a still life set-up in watercolour. You will focus on watercolour techniques using tone and colour. This course forms part of a series of six courses that you can purchase as a group or individually.

Course Description

On this course you will be inspired by a still life arrangement. The day will start with a slide show presentation and a demonstration.

You will focus on tonal studies in watercolour in the morning and in the afternoon, you will move into colour. You will be shown different watercolour painting techniques and how to obtain the correct proportions in your painting of still life.

You will leave having learnt a variety of watercolour techniques and an understanding of composition.

Course Materials

Included

On this course the College will supply some of the materials including paper, charcoal, a putty rubber and a plastic rubber per student.

What students need to bring

  • 2B, 4B, 6B pencils
  • Brushes – pointed round size 16 Pro-Art synthetic brush is ideal or any other watercolour brushes will do. 2 jam jars and a sea sponge
  • Watercolour paints: Lemon yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue Optional extra watercolour paints: Burnt Umber, Paynes Grey, Viridian Green, Yellow Ochre

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Course teaching 11am–5.15pm
Students arrive 10.30am-11am (coffee optional)  
Morning teaching 11am-1pm
Lunch break between 1pm-2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon teaching 2pm-5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes 5.15pm  
 

General Information

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

Access

Please tell us about your needs in confidence by emailing: [email protected] This venue has steps to the front reception, with limited access via a side gate to the ground floor. There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.

Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.
