Learn how to make amazingly beautiful string and cordage from natural fibres that grow in the field and garden. This is an ancient craft and one that is so satisfying to learn.
You will work with many common plants from rhubarb to nettles, daylilies and lime tree bast. It is a craft of experimentation and discovery. You will have the chance to handle and work with many different plants, both fresh and dried, although mainly fresh nettles will be used on this day. You will learn to strip the stalks, process and twist the fibres to make tactile cordage. How to process leaves and bark of other suitable fibres is also covered as you learn the simple technique of twisting them by hand into cord.
On this course the tutor will provide all the materials, including a variety of plant fibres from the field and garden, some dried and some fresh nettles to process.
No tools are necessary, but some dexterity is helpful.
If you have access to any long plant fibres which may be suitable, you are welcome to bring them.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
