Deborah will teach you how to make a pocket spoon (a spoon to carry with you for street food and picnics!).
Using locally sourced greenwood, you will investigate the properties of different species of wood. Working with ready cut blanks, you will learn about drawing the spoon shape on the wood as a means of developing imagination and understanding form. You will learn about the different planes and the crank, as well as learning safe knife holds in order to efficiently and confidently make a better spoon.
Spoon carving is a mindful activity. It requires focus and is an opportunity to master something truly rewarding. This course involves the use of sharp hand tools in close proximity to the body, Full demonstration and tuition will be given for their use but a calm, patient and focused attitude is essential for the safe practice and wellbeing of the group. Tutor supervision is required at all times when students work in this workshop.
We ask that all students arrive promptly for the 11am start as there is a lot to fit into the day’s carving.
On this course the tutor will supply a greenwood blank (20 x 5cms) to carve.
An apron and sturdy footwear is essential
Necessary tools will be supplied for use on the day, including sloyd carving knives, spoon knives, flexible rulers and watercolour pencils.
