The intention of the course will be to look at ways in which collage methods can be used to make something that constructs a space or spaces within a piece of work, creating invented space rather than an ‘illusionistic‘ view. We will explore the idea of a collage being something that can evoke both a feel or an atmosphere, rather than ideas of literal depiction, investigating ways to make something that functions as a self-contained thing in its own right, its existence justified by its own internal ‘visual poetry’.
Working predominantly with paper, painted colour sheets, scissors and glue, you will explore this way of thinking about collage that first emerged with Cubism – ‘The Cubists saw their paintings as constructed objects having their own independent existence, as small, independent worlds, not reflecting the outside world but recreating it in a completely new form’ (John Golding- Cubism, a history and analysis 1907-14, 1959), and you will be encouraged to think about collage in these terms during the course.
