Interior Design student wins competition with Jacaranda
Earlier this year Interior Design students had the opportunity to design a rug collection from concept materials to colours in a competition hosted by Jacaranda Carpets. The winner, Bobbi Fitzpatrick who was an Applied Interior Design Diploma student, celebrated the rugs going into production. "Having admired Jacaranda since my first degree in Textile and Surface Design, winning this industry competition was an honour and truly gratifying.”
The winning concept and design came from the breathtaking landscape Bobbi witnessed on a hike along the coastal cliffs in Portugal. Captivated by the natural beauty of erosion, she found inspiration from the unique shapes and textures of the eroded rock surfaces to inform the shapes, colours and materials in the collection. "Throughout my creative process, initial sketches led me through a myriad of designs. I enjoyed experimenting with not only shapes but different pile types and depths. The combination of these elements truly brought the concept of erosion to life within my design." Bobbi comes from a textiles background and combined these skills with her knowledge from the Interior Design diploma, bringing them together to create this stunning collection.
Judge Jo Hamilton said of Bobbi's design, "I was drawn to Bobbi's design not only for its visual appeal but also for the inspiration behind it. I loved the connection with nature and the soft meandering shapes the coastal cliffs had inspired. The thoughtful use of different pile depths and shapes gave her rug a dynamic edge that really made it stand out. In a competition of such a high standard, her unique interpretation of erosion brought the design to life and ultimately won her the competition."
All three of Bobbi's designs have been produced by Jacaranda Carpets and will be sold through bespoke orders. See the concept, mood board and final designs in the gallery below.
