GD furniture conservation students win Derek Austin Awards for Furniture Restoration

We are proud to celebrate the achievements of two Graduate Diploma students, Michael Sentance and Melina Kachrimani, who were recognized with the prestigious Derek Austin Awards for Furniture Restoration back in July. The Worshipful Company of Upholders presented the awards, each worth £300, for their exceptional work in the field of furniture conservation. Senior Warden Roger Wates, who served as the award presenter, praised their skillful restoration and conservation of two walnut Georgian Country-style chairs.

"I'm thrilled to announce that I've been awarded the prestigious Derek Austin Furniture Restoration Award for 'Greatest Progression'! This recognition honors students who have demonstrated significant advancement in practical skills and applied theory in furniture conservation. As a mature student with a background in fine arts and conservation, I was nominated by my tutor for this award during my first year studying abroad in a new language and educational system. The Graduation Diploma program has been an invaluable introduction to the MA, enriching my skill set and boosting my confidence in conservation practices. It has equipped me with new hand skills and reaffirmed my passion for this field. Currently, I'm working on a complex conservation project involving a late Georgian work table and writing my thesis, aiming to contribute to the broader field of conservation. This award has inspired me to continue pushing the boundaries of furniture restoration, blending traditional techniques with innovative approaches." - Melina Kachrimani

"During my time at West Dean, I studied for a graduate diploma in conservation specialising in furniture and related objects. It was a very special experience where I learnt a great deal working on interesting objects alongside friendly and talented craftspeople.

At graduation I was immensely proud to be awarded The Derek Austin Furniture Restoration Award 2024 for 'exceptional standards' presented by the Worshipful Company of Upholders.

Since graduation I have continued to develop my practical skills whilst working at several furniture restoration companies." - Michael Sentance

The Derek Austin Awards, established by the Austin family, celebrate excellence in furniture restoration, a passion carried forward from Derek Austin, the last owner of the family’s antique furniture business in Peckham. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of conservators through this prestigious recognition.

Congratulations to Michael and Melina for their achievements and dedication to preserving the art and craft of furniture restoration!
