What were you doing before studying?
For 15 years I pursued a career in risk management and strategy, always nourishing an ambition to move into the world of design meanwhile undertaking various home refurbishment projects in France and London.
Many elements of my corporate background prepared me well for running my design business.
Why did you decide to study here?
Interior design is in my blood. I grew up in the world of construction, property and design and am inspired by my grandfather, a builder and property developer who set-up a family business in bathroom and kitchen design.
KLC's reputation as well as its syllabus aligned perfectly with my goals as I was looking for a supportive environment that acknowledged the needs of a professional who is retraining.
How do you think studying at KLC School of Design prepared you for what you do now?
On many levels, from the content of the course itself to the support provided by the careers team in sharing work opportunities.
Can you identify some of the highlights and challenges of your time with us?
One of my highlights was the project we got assigned for Neurokinex in designing a rehabilitation space for children.
The main challenge would have been the start of COVID where the course set up had to move from on site to online with extremely short notice.
How has your career evolved since graduating?
Before setting up Sonia b design, I worked with a variety of interior designers and interior architect studios based in London and Oxford both on commercial and residential projects. I also collaborated with a project manager delivering offices design and fit out in Kings Cross.
I set up Sonia b design in December 2021.
What projects are you currently working on?
We work across the UK and Europe. We are currently working on several residential and commercial projects across London and Lyon. These include a complete house renovation in Ealing, house renovation in Southfields, apartment renovation in Hampstead, offices design and fit out in Marylebone, phase 2 of a project in Lyon (bespoke joinery stage) and more exciting projects across London.
We completed early in 2024 projects in Barcelona and in Maida Vale for which pictures can be found on our website.
What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
Establishing a business from scratch and building strong and trusted connections.
My clients' satisfaction is the greatest achievement. Growing my client base through word of mouth and repeat work with existing clients is extremely rewarding.
Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Be open to different opportunities as what makes the journey is the people you meet.
