Diploma HE Applied Interior Design 2014 - 2015

Shanade McAllister-Fisher

Interior Designer

What were you doing before studying and why did you decide to study here?
Before studying, I was working in the city at a consulting firm and felt the need for a career change towards something more creative. I researched a variety of interior design courses, and KLC offered such a comprehensive, in-depth programme with work experience and industry connections that it seemed like the perfect fit.

How do you think studying at KLC School of Design prepared you for what you do now?
It provided me with the essential foundations to enter the workplace. Having the opportunity to work on live projects, both independently and as part of a team, was invaluable in developing my skills.

Can you identify some of the highlights and challenges of your time with us?
One of the highlights was that every day I was learning new skills that were highly sought after in the industry, while also being encouraged to be as creative as possible in such a supportive environment. The challenges were certainly around time management and meeting project deadlines. There were countless late nights and copious amounts of coffee, but once a project was submitted and presented, the sense of achievement was incredible.

How has your career evolved since graduating?
After graduating, I worked for a high-end design studio to gain industry experience before founding my own design studio in 2016. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of working on some remarkable projects across residential, commercial, and hospitality sectors.

What projects are you currently working on?
We are currently working on a holiday home in Mallorca, a family home in Queen’s Park, a townhouse in Kensington, and a few small FF&E projects in central London.

What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
Our recent completion of a full refurbishment of a family home in North London, which included a basement dig-out and rear extension, is certainly a significant achievement. The project was complex, involving various third parties, and took over two years to complete. The end result is stunning. Alongside this, surviving and thriving in what has been a challenging few years for small businesses is another major accomplishment.

Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Take the time to figure out what you truly want to do, and then pursue it with passion. Skills can be acquired, but genuine enthusiasm and authenticity are priceless.
