Interior Designer
What were you doing before studying and why did you decide to study here?
I also run another business that I still own but no longer operationally involved in. It's in the hospitality and leisure industry.
How do you think studying at KLC School of Design prepared you for what you do now?
I think it was a great learning ground for the basics and has allowed me to make my own way through freelance and direct projects. A good start to the journey to have that dedicated time to learn.
Can you identify some of the highlights and challenges of your time with us?
Highlights included the final project, loved working with 'real' clients. Challenges included some of my classmates who were less interested in pursuing a serious career in Interior Design.
How has your career evolved since graduating?
I have started my own business, Martell-Surtees Interiors, and initially undertook a year of freelance work to continue learning with other more experienced interior designers, before taking on my own clients.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on two commercial projects, currently pitching for a large hospitality project, and about to start a residential project.
What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
Project managing my own house build and interior fit out.
Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Gain as much on the job experience with another interior designer to see how they do things, then you can pick how you like to work and what you feel gives the best experience to your clients. Secure time with a mentor, I booked time with Evey Dunbaven-Hands (hands on design) who helped me with my documents and legals which are so important to protect yourself. Make sure you recognise what you are capable of and outsource the bits you are not competent or qualified in!
