Interior Designer
What was your background before KLC?
I majored in English Language and Literature and I graduated in July 2014, and started KLC immediately after in January 2015. So I came to KLC with no background whatsoever in design, all I came with was my passion and eagerness to learn.
Why did you decide to study Interior Design?
Interior Design has always been something that I wanted to do ever since I was in secondary school. It was my first choice for a degree, but I was living in Nigeria then, and there aren’t a lot of schools back there that teach Interior design at that age I wasn’t prepared to leave home and go somewhere to study, so after completing my degree I realized that there was a huge market for interior designers in Nigeria, there isn’t much competition at the moment, a lot of upcoming residential projects back home in Abuja usually get their designers from abroad, so I decided to fill in that margin and eventually go back home after gaining all the experience here and set up my own practice.
What did you think of the Diploma course?
I did not expect it to have been this intense! I came in completely blind and oblivious about what interior design really entails, (watching a lot of design shows fed into that view). The course had its up and downs, there were moments where I felt like giving up, but I do love this field, and after the tears, the sweat, and the sleepless nights it is just so rewarding and fulfilling and looking back now, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
What would you say are your design strengths?
My strengths are mainly working on the software we were taught, like AutoCAD, Aketchup and InDesign. I really do enjoy creating visuals and seeing the actual design take place and seeing it in 3D, rather than as a plan. Because it gives you a whole different perspective and from there you can see what works and what doesn’t.
What space best represents you?
I love contemporary designs, so in any space that has clean lines, and polished reflective surfaces, I want everything to be able to be tucked away neatly, I love a space that has different layers of lighting, and I love open spaces with as much natural light as possible. color wise, prefer monochromatic pallets, or muted tones of beige, grey, and cream with accents of colour.
Which are your favourite interiors?
I don’t have a specific interior that I can call my favourite, designs and styles are constantly changing and evolving, and new trends are coming out so fast it makes one dizzy to keep up. I love to move with the times and try out new ideas and styles, so any contemporary interior that works and is functional and practical works for me.
Who is your favourite designer?
I have more than one designer that I really admire, designers like Laura Hammett, Sophie Paterson, Karen Howes, Jeff Lewis and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. They all have their distinctive features in design, but one thing that they have all in common and I guess what draws me to their designs is their works on contemporary and transitional spaces.
