Interior Designer
What were you doing before studying and why did you decide to study here?
I had graduated from a degree in BSC Food Technology and a Masters in International Creative Advertising. However, I didn’t see my future within the food industry and the advertising sector was saturated with more experienced students than myself. I then went on to help my parents choose FF&E for their flat and really enjoyed the process and experience but needed to study at an institution that didn’t require art at any education level and KLC was one of those places.
How do you think studying at KLC School of Design prepared you for what you do now?
KLC provides you with the knowledge of how to critically analyse a brief as well as the rapid pace of learning which is similar to how the interior design world is. It also was a creative way of learning which helps with the first stages of interiors such as concept and so on.
Can you identify some of the highlights and challenges of your time with us?
My highlights were the overall atmosphere, it was a fun creative process working with like-minded people where all the tutors were nurturing with an emphasis on specific software. The main challenge would have to be the timeline of the main project whilst learning multiple new softwares and having deadlines for other assignments.
How has your career evolved since graduating?
I have worked for multiple firms from commercial design at Brady Williams & in-house at Jamie Oliver to installing a pub project in the Cotswolds with Nicola Harding. To now owning my own firm working on a plethora of projects from Cornwall to Central London.
What projects are you currently working on?
A 5 floor town house on Portobello Road, a stables renovation in the Cornish countryside and a characterful café in Kings Cross with the Alma group.
What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement would have to be either being named ‘Sheerluxe 2024 Designers to Watch’ or a full project feature in English Home.
Do you have any tips for recent graduates?
Sometimes the best decision when in the industry is for what you can learn and not necessarily the promotion, that your personality is a key component to your success as it is who you know and how you treat others. Also, always have some sketches in your portfolio no matter what you think about them.
