St Philip Howard Life Drawing Day

West Dean College of Arts and Conservation recently welcomed 30 budding Year 10 artists from St Philip Howard Catholic School for a life drawing lesson delivered by artist and tutor, Chris Gilvan-Cartwright.

As well as learning new techniques with paints and charcoal and experiencing the freedom of large scale drawing, pupils commented on how they enjoyed taking risks and being brave with their portraiture. They loved the experience of painting a live model and being spontaneous in their creative approach, not worrying about it looking perfect.  One pupil said “I learned that art is about my interpretation and how I view it. I feel more confident now in having fun and expressing myself creatively.”

The Head of Art at St Philip Howard Catholic School said “the kids came back buzzing from the experience and thoroughly enjoyed working in a studio setting taught by a professional artist.”

Pupils were given an insight into the historic background of the College, the art collection and the types of courses on offer. Around 70% said they would consider coming to West Dean for a full time degree and diploma course in the future and over 80% said they would like to try the range of short courses on offer such as pottery, blacksmithing and writing.
