Interior Design: work placement experience

- By diploma interior design student, Mira Kjöller

My name is Mira, and last year, I decided to finally pursue my dream of becoming an interior designer. After completing my BA in International Communication Management and working in marketing for several years, I realized that interior design was my true passion.

I first heard about KLC School of Design through family friends who knew graduates of the program and spoke highly of the course and its opportunities. The one-year Diploma was ideal for me, as I was looking for an intensive program without having to commit to another bachelor’s degree. Shortly after, I applied to the Higher-Level Diploma and made the move to London to fully immerse myself in the design world.

When we were informed of the chance to do a placement after the summer, I chose Nefarious Design. I had heard wonderful things about the studio from a coursemate who had completed her placement there, and I was drawn to their unique design aesthetic.

From day one of my placement, I was immediately given hands-on experience, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I worked on designing a living room and snug for a family home, where I was responsible for creating elevations, designing joinery, scheming, producing Photoshop renders, and preparing the final presentation for the client. Adam, the owner and an ex-KLC student himself, made a point to teach me as much as possible during those four weeks, for which I am incredibly grateful.

The placement was a pivotal experience in helping me understand my strengths and areas for improvement, as it was my first time applying what I had learned in a real-world setting. The positive feedback I received boosted my confidence and solidified my path as an interior designer.

Learning key design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Photoshop has equipped me with essential tools for the industry. Additionally, balancing multiple projects in a short time frame taught me how to manage my time effectively and work efficiently.

After completing the course and my placement at Nefarious Design, I decided to stay in London and pursue my career in interior design. I am currently working on a three-bedroom flat in Bayswater for a friend, while actively seeking a junior designer role in a studio where I can continue to grow and contribute my skills.
